Rass Lila Phad Painting of Rajasthan is an original Phad style painting depicting Radha and Krishna, hand-painted by Artshaili artists with natural pigments, 24×18 in. It is a genuine handmade artwork, not a print, so every brushstroke is unique and small variations from the photos are natural.
The meaning of Radha and Krishna in Indian art
Radha and Krishna are the most beloved couple in Indian art and poetry. Their love stands for the soul’s longing for the divine, and painters show it through scenes of Krishna playing his flute, the two meeting in a flowering grove, or dancing the Raas Leela with the gopis under the moon. Krishna is painted blue, the colour of the monsoon sky and the infinite, and often wears a peacock feather in his crown.
About the Phad style
Phad is the folk scroll painting tradition of Rajasthan, centred on Shahpura and Bhilwara and kept alive by the Joshi painter families. It uses flat bright colours, bold black outlines and crowded storytelling compositions, and was traditionally sung at night by Bhopa priest-singers. Read our guide to Phad painting of Rajasthan.
