Baramasa Sawan Month Painting in Kangra Style is an original Kangra style painting depicting Radha and Krishna, hand-painted by Artshaili artists in stone colours, 32.5×20.5 cm. The meaning of Radha and Krishna in Indian art
Radha and Krishna are the most beloved couple in Indian art and poetry. Their love stands for the soul’s longing for the divine, and painters show it through scenes of Krishna playing his flute, the two meeting in a flowering grove, or dancing the Raas Leela with the gopis under the moon. Krishna is painted blue, the colour of the monsoon sky and the infinite, and often wears a peacock feather in his crown.
The story: Sawan in the Baramasa
The Baramasa (“twelve months”) is a poetic tradition that describes love through the changing seasons of the year. This painting is inspired by the Baramasa verses of the poet Keshavdas. For the month of Sawan, the monsoon month of union, the Nayika (heroine) urges the Nayaka (hero) not to think of leaving her. Here Radha and Krishna play the Nayika and Nayaka: under dark monsoon clouds, among marble buildings, green hilltops and flowing streams, Radha points to the sky and asks Krishna to stay close. The scene is framed by ornate foliage, a celebration of romance in nature.
Each element is drawn by hand with ultra-fine brushes and natural stone-based pigments by an artist with over 35 years of experience in miniature painting. Read more about the season-themed paintings of the hills in our guide to Pahari paintings.
About the Kangra style
Kangra painting is the most lyrical school of Pahari (hill) painting from Himachal Pradesh, which flowered in the late 18th century under Raja Sansar Chand. It is loved for cool, soft colours, flowing lines, graceful slender figures and landscapes of rivers, flowering trees and monsoon clouds. Favourite themes are Radha and Krishna, the Gita Govinda and heroines in love. Read our guide to Pahari paintings.
