King and Queen Enjoying Music in Garden is an original Phad style painting depicting royal portraits and court scenes, hand-painted by Artshaili artists with natural pigments, 10×10 in. It is a genuine handmade artwork, not a print, so every brushstroke is unique and small variations from the photos are natural.
The meaning of royal portraits and court scenes in Indian art
Royal portraits and court scenes were at the heart of Indian court painting. Rulers commissioned paintings of themselves in profile, at their darbar, hunting or celebrating festivals, and these works now offer a vivid window into the costumes, jewellery and etiquette of the past.
About the Phad style
Phad is the folk scroll painting tradition of Rajasthan, centred on Shahpura and Bhilwara and kept alive by the Joshi painter families. It uses flat bright colours, bold black outlines and crowded storytelling compositions, and was traditionally sung at night by Bhopa priest-singers. Read our guide to Phad painting of Rajasthan.
